But Mikel’s main adviser has rubbished the reports, stating that Mikel is staying put at Chelsea even though his appearances for the Londoners have been limited since the start of this season.

“I spoke to Mikel on Wednesday and I can tell you he is remaining at Chelsea. He has no plans of joining Besiktas,” Mikel’s representative told allnigeriasoccer.com.

In the past, the Nigeria international had been courted by fellow Istanbul powerhouses Galatasaray and Fenerbahce but the moves never happened.

The former Lyn Oslo man is tied to Chelsea until June 30, 2017.

Former Manchester United man Phil Neville appointed as Valencia's assistant coach

Former Manchester United and Everton star Neville is poised to take on the role a year after leaving the coaching staff at Old Trafford.

Valencia announced Neville's appointment on their website, but it is understood the 38-year-old remains in talks over the new role.

Neville, who worked as a coach under former United boss Moyes, has spent the past 12 months working as a pundit and commentator.

He is set to replace Ian Cathro, who left Valencia to join Steve McClaren's backroom staff at Newcastle.

Valencia released a statement which read: "Phil Neville becomes the new assistant coach alongside Nuno Espirito Santo on the Valencia bench.

"Neville offers a wealth of footballing knowledge to a club in constant growth."

Valencia boss Nuno added: "Phil Neville has great experience at the top level of competition, but above all he has knowledge and values that fit perfectly with our team and our club.

"He has always been a team player, and our philosophy is based on teamwork. We are - and want to continue to be - a group. I am convinced that he is going to help us a lot."

See Why Keshi dropped Mikel & Ejide from the squad to face Chad in June 13’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

Keshi explains Mikel & Ejide exclusion
The Super Eagles handler has explained why he exempted the duo from his team to face Les Sao in next week's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in KadunaNigeria coach Stephen Keshi has cleared the air on why he dropped Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel and goalkeeper Austin Ejide from the squad to face Chad in June 13’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier billed for Kaduna

The ‘big boss’ in a parley with media said claims that he is having a strained relationship with the former Flying Eagles star is untrue, insisting he had talked about [his exclusion] with him.

"I decided not to bring him (Mikel) because right now I don't need him for this game. Mikel and I spoke. We talked about it and he said no problem,” Keshi told media.

"I told him we will talk for the September game.

“For Ejide, we are playing only a game now which is against Chad. So bringing in two foreign based goalkeepers is [uncalled for], I think I would rather give room to two local goalkeepers to go with captain [Vincent] Enyeama.

"If it were to be two games, I would have invited two foreign based goalkeepers. That actually informed my exclusion of Mikel and Austin Ejide.

"So with these three goalkeepers in camp it should be okay for the game. If we do not give them the room and opportunity to grow, when will they become Ejide or Vincent Enyeama or Emmanuel Okala?,” he concluded.

Pictures of Real Madrid’s rumoured new navy blue third kit have flooded the internet in recent days
Reports online also suggest the shorts and socks for the kit will be dark blue with a lighter blue trim to match the shirt.
It is so far unknown when Real Madrid will officially unveil the new design with current headlines at the club concentrating on the unveiling of Benitez as new boss instead.
Madrid will be hoping it’s not the only unveiling to look forward to this summer as the club continue to be linked with the signing of David de Gea and Paul Pogba.

Rafael Benitez named new Real Madrid coach

Madrid (AFP) - Rafael Benitez will take charge of Real Madrid next season after the club confirmed he had signed a three-year deal with the Spanish giants on Wednesday.

"Real Madrid will present today, Wednesday, June 3, Rafa Benitez as the new coach of the first team for the next three seasons," the club said in a statement.

Benitez will give a press conference at 1100GMT at the club's Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

The appointment brings Benitez's coaching career full circle as he returns to the club where he made his first steps as a youth team coach in the early nineties.

Benitez is also returning to Spain for the first time in over a decade after making a name for himself with two league titles in three years at Valencia between 2001 and 2004.

However, commentators and fans have been skeptical at his appointment at the expense of the well-loved Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked by the club last week.

Ancelotti ended a 12-year wait to land Madrid's much desired 10th Champions League last season, but paid the price for failing to deliver a major trophy this season with eternal rivals Barcelona on the brink of sealing a treble.

Moreover, Benitez has failed to land a league title in the 11 years since he swapped Valencia forLiverpool.

The 55-year-old's greatest achievement in that time came in winning the Champions League in his first season at Liverpool. However, he delivered only the UEFA Super Cup and the FA Cup in 2006 in the five years that followed at Anfield.

Benitez then had a nightmare experience following in the footsteps of Jose Mourinho at Inter Milanwhere he lasted just six months and another short-lived unhappy spell at Chelsea followed as he was never accepted by the fans despite winning the Europa League in 2013.

A two-year spell with Italian giants Napoli also came to an unsatisfactory end on Sunday with a 4-2 home defeat to Lazio which ensured they did not qualify for next season's Champions League.

Benitez could face a frosty reception from Real's horde of 'galacticos' who were very much against Ancelotti's sacking.

"Great coach and amazing person. Hope we work together next season," World Player of the YearCristiano Ronaldo posted on his official Twitter days before the Italian's dismissal.

Meanwhile, a host of other players including Sergio Ramos, James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos also took to social media to thank Ancelotti for his time at the club.

In contrast to the affable Ancelotti, Benitez is known for being a strict disciplinarian and obsessive tactician which will put new demands on the most expensively assembled squad in football history.

Former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel caused a stir last week when he tweeted: "Benitez on his way to Real? He will make Ronaldo a great defender..."

However, another of Benitez's perceived faults during his time in England, his persistent squad rotation, has helped him to land his dream job.

Whilst Barcelona boss Luis Enrique gave his players a rest at every opportunity early in the season, Ancelotti rotated very little even in Madrid's easiest games and consequently saw his side run out of gas at the business end of the season.

Benitez will get his first taste of the demands at Los Blancos on a gruelling pre-season tour to Australia and China for friendlies against Roma, Manchester City, Inter Milan and AC Milan in July.

Mourinho praises Mikel, slams Ruben

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has named Mikel Obi as one of the outstanding players in the Blues 1-0 victory over hosts Sydney FC in their post-season friendly in Australia on Tuesday.

Mikel, who did not enjoy enough first-team appearance with the London club in their last season’s campaign, played in the entire duration of the game, but teenage defender Temitayo Aina was on the bench throughout.

Loic Remy gave the visitors the only goal of the game via a left-footed strike at the ANZ Stadium, but Mourinho never underplayed the role of Mikel in the encounter.

“I’m happy with the performance of my senior players because it’s been a long season, in fact very long,” Mourinho said on Chelsea’s website.

“There were some performances from people like Ivanovic, Terry and Mikel where they tried to play football and the result could have been completely different.

“In the last part of the game the younger boys couldn’t cope with the competitiveness of the Sydney players, they felt they had a chance and they pushed a little bit in the last period.”

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, the teenage midfielder who recently joined the senior team, was tongue-lashed by the Portuguese.

“Ruben said he had a pain in his back, but I think he was more impressed by watching Matic and Mikel work, instead of him working,” Mourinho said.

“He has to learn that at 19 you have to run three times more than the others, you have to play to your limits and not play like a superstar with the ball at your feet because this is not Under-18s.”

Mikel had earlier expressed his pleasure at seeing some 10,000 supporters turn out to watch their training in Sydney.

Trophy-Less Real Madrid Sack Ancelotti

Real Madrid have terminated the contract of manager Carlo Ancelotti after two seasons in charge.

Club president Florentino Perez announced the decision in a press conference as the popular Italian paid the price for a trophy-less season at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I would like to inform you that the board has taken the decision to relieve Carlo Ancelotti of his post as Real Madrid coach," Perez said.

"It was a very difficult decision to make; the demands at this club are the utmost because Madrid always wants to win silverware.

"The affection that the players and the fans have for Carlo is the same as the affection I myself have for him.

"What did Ancelotti do wrong? I don't know. The demands here at Real Madrid are very high."

Napoli's Spanish boss Rafael Benitez is odds-on favourite (1/3) to take over from Ancelotti and Perez confirmed the club hope to announce his successor next week.

Ancelotti won the Champions League, Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup in his first season in charge at the Bernabeu and followed up with FIFA’s Club World Cup in December.

However, Real finished two points behind La Liga champions Barcelona while they were eliminated by Juventus in the Champions League semi-finals.

Despite Real’s struggles, Ancelotti retained the support of the club’s leading players including Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Great coach and amazing person. Hope we work together next season," Ronaldo posted on his official Twitter account after bagging his eighth hat-trick of the season in Saturday’s 7-3 thrashing of Getafe alongside a photo of Ancelotti and himself.

Former Chelsea manager Ancelotti had previously stated that if he was relieved of his duties by Real he would undergo surgery on a back problem and take a break from the game despite offers from some of Europe’s leading clubs.

"I can assure you that I have not lacked opportunities, from Italy, England and Germany," Ancelotti, 55, told Il Giornale. "And I will not lack [offers] between now and next year.

"But I said it in the press conference and I repeat: I will stop for a year, also because I have a very serious reason for stopping.

"I have to have an operation because of my cervical stenosis. For some time, it has been affecting my hands and if I lose any more time, it could pass into legs, so I have an appointment for surgery.

"And, frankly, I do not know how long I have to be physically stopped, in terms of the post-operative phase and the subsequent rehabilitation."

Once news of his sacking was confirmed Ancelotti took to Twitter to thank everyone associated with the club.

"I'd like to keep in mind this two fantastic years at Real Madrid. Thanks to the club, the supporters and my players," he said.
