Angry Nigerian youths took over the streets of Enugu yesterday and gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the government of South Africa to stop the recent killings of Nigerians in that country or face a reprisal attack on its business facilities and citizens in Nigeria.
The youths, who stormed the Enugu State capital in their numbers, carried placards with different inscriptions condemning the clamp down and killing of Nigerians in South Africa.
The youths, under the aegis of Youth Action for Success, said: “We give South Africa government 48 hours to ensure that the lives of Nigerians in its territory are protected.”
National President of the group, who is also the South-East coordinator of Prince-7 Youth Movement, Onu Jessicaih Okorie, said the South-African president would have to assure the world that Nigerians in South Africa were safe.
“South Africa should ensure that the properties of Nigerians there are also safe. If they don’t do that, we are going to react and our reaction will be disastrous.
“We are asking all Nigerian youths to be calm till the next 48 hours. We have to hear from the South African President Jacob Zuma and Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan. They must speak to us; we have to hear from the President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, he has to speak to us. We are not happy and if the young people react now, nobody can stop us.
“They have Shoprite here, there is DSTV and of-course MTN. So, why are they killing us? Why are they looting our property? Why are they frustrating the business efforts of Nigerians in that place?
Also speaking, the state Coordinator of the group, Okonkwo Felix, said: “The youths are watching to see government take proper action or we may be forced to destroy property of South Africans in Nigeria as well.”
