Oscar Pistorius was today jailed for five years after shooting his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through his bathroom door.
Judge Thokozile Masipa sent the 27-year-old Paralympian to prison despite his lawyers arguing he was a broken man and should be given an non-custodial sentence.
But minutes after the verdict his defence lawyers said he may serve just 10 months inside and then the rest of his sentence under house arrest.
Oscar appeared to wipe away a tear as the sentence was handed out as Judge Masipa said: "For a very good reason a sentence should neither be too light, nor too severe."Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius will be sentenced today for shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The double-amputee sprinter, 27, admitted killing the model and TV presenter at his home in Pretoria in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year.
He said it was a tragic accident when he mistook Reeva for an intruder and opened fire on his bathroom door.
But Pistorius was arrested and charged with murder.
Following a two-month trial, he was acquitted but found guilty of culpable homicide and faces up to 15 years in jail.
Oscar Pistorius must serve a minimum of one sixth of his sentence.
After that he may be allowed out of prison and serve the remainder under house arrest.
His legal team think that means they could have Oscar home after just 10 months in prison.
However, the South African state prosecutor says it is more likely Pistorius will serve a third of his sentence in prison.
That would be something around 15 months behind bars.
